On weaning

At the age of 4 years and 9 months, Leni has naturally weaned. I imagined feeling emotional about weaning when I thought about it when she was younger but it has been so gradual, such a gentle transition over the last year that it just feels beautifully normal. I decided that this was the path for us when Leni was 6 months old. 'Extraordinary Breastfeeding' was shown for the first time and it made sense to me, especially as breastfeeding had only just become easy for us and people were expecting me to switch her to a bottle.

Nursing Leni has profoundly changed me and I am so greatful for the experience. When I believed I had nothing left to give her, breastfeeding kept me coming back and was always just perfect. Leni's fierce need to nurse through toddlerhood, pregnancy, in labour and to tandem nursing and my ability to do it has proven to me that I am good enough, because she needs me to be. No depression can stand up to breastfeeding.

Now, at bedtime we read and snuggle until she goes to sleep. A change, but still the same connection and love.

Such a lovely post Clare, it is such a gift to let children self wean. Tarka did so just before his fourth birthday, his last feed was a snuggly feed to sleep, such a happy memory!
Love to you all

What a lovely post.
The best of gifts for our children.
Cain is feeding less regularly now, twice this week but not at all last week. It's oh so bittersweet isn't it? He nursed tonight and said that he loved boobie and was going to keep having it until he's six. He is five in August so obviously thinks planning longterm is safer ;-)
Blessings to you all.
