Pre-children (and stop giggling before you start!) I was into gothic victoriana, but lack of maternity clothes meant I floated away from it and when Leni was a couple of months old I decided that my taste in clothes had to 'grow up'. Which is probably symptomatic of me having fairly awful PND at the time and feeling as though I didn't know who I am. I realise that this was daft now. Since then I have dabbled in 'general hippy', 'scruffy' and 'semi-fashionable Mumsy'. None of these really make me feel like my clothes reflect me, which is the whole point.
So, I've been happily engaged in drooling over clothes for a few days and wondering how to find the money for them. How does one 'launch' a make over though? Especially one that not everyone will get? Just turn up to an event in satin corset coat (I am so glad I kept it!), skirt with bustle and corset? Erm......
In case anyone fancies a bit of Steampunk...look what I found... www.gaia-noir.co.uk Steampunk upcycled loveliness!

Oh I do love Steampunk. :)
Yes, totally, you could just turn up in your new wardrobe! It would make my day to see a mama confidently strutting her stuff in something totally *her* and I would go up and start chatting to her right away lol. Being yourself is a powerful and beautiful thing. :)
Perhaps you could ease people in gently by starting with some accessories (easier on your budget too) and then one day, turn up in a corset. I dare you! :)
I will if you will. We can compare notes on what reaction we get wearing red velvet to mums and tots. :)
Go for it!!! Love the website too :o)
Well, we're about to get a big rebate on our TV license (as we cancelled it!) so I do have some money to spend...
Am going to just buy a few bits to start with, the oxfam online shop is surprisingly good for stuff that can be Steampunked!

I have been embracing a bit of steam punk and rockbilly as well as some lovely corsets recently, the corsets (underbust of course as bfing) look lovely over hippy and floaty clothes.
Embrace it and go for it, I expect to see bustles galore at the GP weekend ;)
Have a couple of websites you may like, for very easy bustle design and ebay steampunk style.
Good luck, love to all x
Sorry for some reason it posted twice lol!
Oh what memories. I too was such a fan of corsets, laces, big skirts and steampunk. And then I had a baby.....and another.....and yet another. And I turned into the person I am now - the jeans and t-shirt mama. How I would love to resurrect my old style, even just for a short while, but alas steampunk on a just about to turn 40 mother of eight and a grandma to boot? Maybe I could, but not so sure if the grown up ones would like it.....
You go for it Clare, you are a beautiful, shapely woman and I just know you could carry it off so well.
xx
I so relate to this post! Really hope you are embracing a new look now. :) I turn 30 next month but feel closer to forty or fifty! Definitely tired, frumpy and plain. I've been browsing etsy and drooling over patchwork skirts, big dangly Indian inspired earrings and dreads! Lol. Trying to see if I can budget a mini makeover for myself. Good luck with yours x
oh and I totally want to hear about you and Sarah rockin' the corsets at your local groups ;)
Aw, thankyou for the pleasant comment on my website! :)
And agreeing muchly with your sentiments and those of the comments thread - I am not a mamma myself (yet, perhaps! :P ) but a number of my companions at the local Glasgow goth clubs and crafty places have little ones (5 of them, in one case!) and it's always charming to see them fitting their unique style around their parental duties - one lady at a burlesque show even asked if I could make a tiny matching Victorian bustle skirt for her daughter. I don't really do childrenswear but the mental picture was so cute I'd have been tempted!
